Home GUIDE FAQ

Virtual Remote's TV Guide is capable of displaying BEV and Dish Network 44 hrs worth of  TV programming.

Dish Network:
EPG stream (pid 12) is compressed and the data rate is very high.
The receiving VR buffer is 2.34 MB
That buffer size is selected experimentally to assure that the whole (99%) of the next 24 hrs of programming is being displayed.
Decompressing of that data takes all CPU resources from seconds to the couple of minutes (depending on CPU frequency).
Users with soft cards or Nexus cars running in soft mode will notice the picture freeze during decompressing, which will happen every 30 minutes, on 7th and 37th minute of the hour (14th and 44th minute of the hour on client computer).
To avoid that freeze:
1. Load TV Guide on startup
2. Right click on VR SysTray icon and put TV Guide in offline mode.

This will prevent TV Guide from auto update.
To update TV Guide manually click on the big red dot (window right edge).

Bell Express Vu:
BEV data stream is not compressed and the data rate is very small and it varies vey much depending on the transponder.
Receiving buffer size is 400 kB, but because of the lower data rate it takes quite a while to fill it up.
Displayed data is mostly the next 2 hrs of programming.
To squeeze more data from stream:
            1. Start TV Guide with one the channels:

transponder 1
Nimiq 1 Nimiq 2
#431 SPEED #856 FAIRm
#432 GOLF #857 FAIR*
#459 A&E #892 BTv1

or 2. Tune to the one of the above channels and load guide manually (click on the big red dot).

Loading BEV guide does not involve decompressing (at least for now) so it is not necessary to put TV Guide in offline mode for soft card users.

command prompt trailing parameters

For people who like their own way Virtual Remote can be invoked from command line with the following parameters:
/setup---->VR will start with setup window open
/min------>it will start in minimized state
/A--------->it will start in A/B switch position A
/B--------->it will start in A/B switch position B

OPERATION:
To display real time TV Virtual Remote receives data from ProgDVB.

For proper operation Virtual Remote expects ProgDVB executable to be located in \ProgDVB folder.

TV Guide is updated periodically every 30 minutes, on 7th and 37th minute of the hour.
Depending on CPU it may take from few seconds to few minutes, taking 100% CPU resources.
On slower computers and for soft card users it may cause temporary picture freeze.
If that happens, use offline mode (right click on systray icon and select 'TV Guide offline')

1.
updating 44 hrs guide consumes all CPU resources:
it is a short time for BEV
but for DishNet it takes about 5 times longer because of EPG decompression.
2.
Updating BEV guide:
VR automatically switches to transponder 1 channel 459 (A&E) just to get data, then it returns display back to previous channel and parses new update.

Updating Dish Network:
VR automatically switches to channel 118 (A&E) just to get data, then it returns display back to previous channel and decompresses and parses new update.

On my 2000+AMD CPU:
to update BEV it takes about 20 seconds: 10 secs to get data and 10 secs to process it.
to update DishNet it takes about 2 minutes: 7 secs to get data and the remaining time to decompress and display guide.

Practically, to have the complete 44 hrs guide VR needs about 2 passes, each in different time.
After that it can be put in offline mode to avoid future interferences with watching or recording video.
Also, it can be used that way by ppl using MyTheatre:
1. Start ProgDVB and let Virtual Remote load 44 hrs guide
2. Close ProgDVB and use MyTheatre to watch tv.

Important:
On startup VR does not grab 44 hrs guide. It will grab data on the first 7th minute of the hour event.
To force manual update: click on satellite logo. See below:

REMARKS:
VR version 4.5+ is better designed to handle A/B switching. I recommend, that even users who do not use A/B switching ( all feeds coming by one cable) use 2 separate ProgDVB folders: one for Dish (A position) and second one for BEV (B position).

Troubleshooting
Error 999: "Missing Satellite Signal"
or
VR stumbles on "Acquiring Satellite signal"
(normally it should take a few seconds to acquire signal and switch to "Processing Satellite signal" window

1. Check if there is StreamRedirect.module in ProgDVB \Modules subdirectory
2. In ProgDVB>Settings>Module list:
Stream redirector must be checked and EPG must be unchecked

Using Virtual Remote
To enter SETUP double click on Virtual Remote systray icon or
start it with /setup as a trailing parameter:
[path]RemCon.exe /setup

Virtual Remote is designed to run continously in background, keeping track of time, and executing time related functions:
- update computer clock
- start scheduled recording (there is not need for ProgDVB to be active)
- alert about incoming event
- sleep (turn off ProgDVB after specified time)

Hard mode (ss1 card) users:

keep VR in online mode all the time to continously collecting real time data.

Soft card (ss1-soft mode, ss2, TwinHan, Nova) card users:
and for users with slower computers:

After initial start and loading TV Guide display use VR offline mode, to avoid interruptions during viewing or recording.
In all other times it is recommended to put VR in online mode so TV Guide can be updated periodically.

A/B switching

Recommended setup:
Position A:
basic ProgDVB folder usual it will be: c:\ProgDVB
It shall group one cluster of satellites (signal providers) connected to the same Diseqc switch.
For example: North American users can connect together all EchoStar satellites.
Position B:
Second ProgDVB folder, for example: c:\ProgDVB_B
This path must be inserted in Setup>A/B Switch options.
It shall group another cluster of satellites (signal providers) connected to the second Diseqc switch.
North American users can consider connecting together Nimiq1, Nimiq2, Telstar5 and other satellites.

To automatically switch between A & B you need A/B switch connected to Comm Port.
For manually switching any A/B switch is good.

Virtual Remote over LAN

Virtual Remote on the client computer will receive data over the network and display real time TV Guide.
Updating is periodical, every 30 minutes on 14th and 44th minute of the hour.

NOTES:

1. In Options>TV Guide select: Display Guide > 24 hrs option
2. In online mode 44hrs guide is automatically updated on 55th minute of the hour.--->old version
Starting with the version 4.52 the 44 hrs guide is automatically updated on 7th minute of the hour.
3. To manually force 44 hrs update: Click on satellite logo
4. Remainder: to manually update 24 hrs guide click on red dot.
5. When loading 44 hrs guide you should be able to see at the bottom of the guide scrolling parsing data: it displays partial data only just to make you feel better during processing it.
